Get Recycling!

Image
** The news is not great on the recycling front. According to a report that appeared in The Journal recentlly, figures from WEEE Ireland (which is, as you know, an acronym for Waste Electrical Electronic Equipment), out of every ten tech products sold, only four make it into the recycling chain. That’s woeful to say the least. Very disappointing. With the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) and Repak promoting recycling and with outlets available you’d think that there would be more of a will out there to recycle and save our world while we’re at it. When will people ever learn? When it’s too late, it seems.  According to an article on the Repak website on the 5th of April, Ireland’s recycling agencies were fully expecting that Irish households would recycle up to 70,000 tonnes of material this past Easter owing to the effects of the holiday season alone. Well, the Irish public seem to have got the message about recycling packaging, if not tech waste. Something for whic...

Not the Hottest Topic!

Image
  * We might as well face facts. Recycling is NOT a hot topic. Even though this is a recycling blog, I won’t shrink away from saying it. Mention recycling and most people’s eyes glaze over. Why? Because it’s boring, perhaps? Because it makes us all feel a bit guilty? Maybe. Because recycling is part of that whole environment/save the earth scene. Not everyone is excited by that.  So what can THIS recycling blog do? Well, we can shift the focus. We can talk about something that everyone is interested in. Do you want to know what topic is evergreen? What topic fascinates people most of all? I’ll tell you out straight, as Dubliners used to say in former times.  The hot topic is making money. In these difficult times, when people have to tighten their belts and cut their expenses, making money is the topic that catches everyone’s interest. Articles on how to double your income and cut your expenses will never go out of style. It’s a topic that’s dear to everyone’s heart for s...

Are Recycled Goods Good?

Image
The research has been done and the results are in. And the ultimate conclusion is that the residents of this planet must reduce their consumption of the world’s resources. Otherwise, the world faces disaster. The world’s resources will deplete and the amount of waste material will increase. This will lead to a catastrophic situation. Waste management is an increasing problem. The most effective form of waste management is to reduce the amount of waste created. It’s been observed that if all the world’s inhabitants consumed its resources on the level that the citizens of the richest nations do, several planet earths will be needed to sustain the human race. As the saying goes, 'there is no Planet B'. * The ‘3-R Initiative’ has been suggested as a way to control the consumption of the world’s resources. What are these three ‘R’s? Very simple. Just reduce, reuse and recycle. What does that look like? ‘Reduce’ refers to lessening the amount of waste created while consuming resour...

Why Write a Recycling Blog?

Image
  * Here at Recycle Reimagined, I have a particular mission. It is, however, a double-edged mission. Something like a double-edged sword and hopefully just as sharp, but hopefully not as dangerous.  Nowadays, people talk about sustainable lifestyles. On the extreme end of the spectrum, there are those who say that in order to live a truly sustainable lifestyle, you literally have to get off the grid. That means leave the system, live without technology and forget all about progress. On the other end of the spectrum, you see the likes of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who love to talk to us all about saving the planet. Yet they engaged a private plane to help them reach their destination in California. That's one sizeable carbon footprint they've left. It would have made far more sense ecologically to buy a couple of airline tickets and share their flight with fellow travellers. It would have been a much fairer use of resources. But unlike most people, they have a privileged l...

How To be an Eco-Warrior!

Image
Eco-warrior?  What does that even mean? The term first appeared in the 1990s and it's another name for an environmental activist. Especially one that has a very hands-on approach to saving the earth. An eco-warrior is not an armchair activist. He or she is out there, practicing what they preach.  Eco warriors are aware that human civilization has brought pollution to dangerous levels. They do whatever * they can to create environmental awareness. They are highly principled and care deeply for the earth and its population. You'll find them working for environmental organisations like Greenpeace or Friends of the Earth, either in a paid or a voluntary capacity. You may also find them working for companies that sell environmentally-friendly products. There's an Eco-Warriors' Flag. It originated in Australia in the 1990s. It symbolises a cultural, global development and the yellow and red colours are inspired by indigenous tribals around the world. The green colour is insp...

The Nightmare of Tech Waste

Image
We live in an age of lightning-fast communication. You can tell the world what you had for breakfast on a social media post. If that's what you want. The question is, who'd want to do that? And why? News flashes across the globe as soon as it happens. You don't even need to leave your home to buy something. Everything you need can be delivered to your door. The quality of life should be better than ever. * Yet there's a downside to all this progress. The truth is, the earth's natural resources are depleting rapidly. The landfills are filling up with waste, particularly tech waste The earth struggles with pollution and the issues related to its growth. The ice caps are shrinking, causing floods. And don't get me started on the state of the ozone layer.... You may be proud of the fact that your smartphone contains enough technology to launch a rocket. But the fact is that every day, mountains of technological waste are created. Needless, awful waste that never deg...
